Save the Art Wall
The idea for the Hyannis Community Ar t Wall came in 2021 from William Caolo, a Sturgis High School
student looking for a place to create his art. Knowing the many challenges that youth and young adults on
Cape Cod face, acting as adult accomplices to young artists is central to the mission of The Cordial Eye.
We knew it was important to join William in this effort.
After two years of project plans, meetings, letter campaigns, appearing before the Hyannis Main Street
Waterfront Historic District Commission multiple times, and nding partnership with surprising allies like
the Hyannis Public Library and the JFK Museum, we were able to install Cape Cod's rst legal wall, The
Hyannis Community Art Wall, at The Hyannis Public Library.
The Historic Commission only granted permission for the wall as a test run from Memorial Day through
the week after Labor Day; it is time for us to go before them again to continue. Please ll out this three
question survey to let the Historic Commission know why the Hyannis Community Art Wall is important to
our community.

Members of the community are allowed to express themselves on the art wall. I’ve seen some very proud
children, ages 4-12, showing off their artwork that they drew on the wall. I enjoy the fact that it’s ever
changing and that local artists have added their own art to the wall. I understand concern over inappropriate
art but I am also a teacher and I’ve seen inappropriate “ar t” in bathroom stalls and on playground
equipment… the ar t wall is inclusive and beautiful and it should continue!

What do you think about the Hyannis Community Art Wall?*
What town do you live in?
What is something that makes the Hyannis Community Art Wall for the community?

The Ar t Wall is a oppor tunity for ar tists in the Hyannis area, many of whom are struggling financially, to
express themselves in a low-cost, free form manner. Ar t can be cost prohibitive. Anything we can do to open
the doors of ar t making for our lower income community is helpful. Also, Hyannis should work to embrace
our diverse Barnstable community, not just the white upper class that is most represented in the
community's ar t pieces. The Ar t Wall represents all ar tists, regardless of class, training, race, or gender,
making it a better reflection of the Hyannis community.

Please ll out this three
question survey to let the Historic Commission know why the Hyannis Community Art Wall is important to
our community.

creativity. Young people on Cape Cod need positive examples of what they can do with their time, energy

It was built by the community and changed by the community throughout the period that it was available, if
the community collectively liked a piece of artwork, it was collectively respected and left alone, that's what's
so beautiful about it
