HomeMy WebLinkAboutComment from Hurwitz regarding Park City Wind FW_ 2 Short Beach RdFrom: Karle, Darcy Sent: Wednesday, August 9, 2023 12:12 PM To: Cavanaugh, Kimberly Subject: Comment from Hurwitz regarding Park City Wind FW: 2 Short Beach Rd Hi Kim, Please forward this comment leer to the Commissioners. They are invited to aend the meeng described below. Please place in the file. Thank you Darcy From: Larry Hurwitz [mailto:hurwitzl3@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 9, 2023 7:05 AM To: Karle, Darcy Subject: Re: 2 Short Beach Rd Darcy, Thank you for getting back to me. I was on the Zoom meeting last night and heard many comments that had nothing to do with environmental issues. While there was no response during Public Comment, these speakers were allowed to continue. Many of these statements have no scientific or technical merit. Living on the Centerville River I am more concerned and aware than most of those who expressed their concerns last night, for example the person from Nantucket. Avangrid is desperately trying to explain the process and precautions they plan to take. I hope the Committee sees beyond this emotional response and will recognize the environmental benefits. These projects are needed specifically to protect the environment which is consistent with the mission of the Conservation Committee. It’s a question of risk versus reward. Opponents want no risk and therefore are prohibiting everyone from the reward. I agree these projects need thoughtful studies, many of these studies have already been done. The comments regarding update of these studies is unfounded. These studies take time, they cannot be accomplished in a matter of months. The purchase of 2 Short Beach Rd is also a benefit to the environment. For too many years the residents of Short Beach Rd have had to look at this eyesore as the weeds took over the property. The lot and the structure on it are a health and safety hazard. I can’t begin to tell you how many times this problem has been communicated to various Town Departments, the result being that nothing has been done. Now Park City Wind wants to improve the situation but it’s “ not one of our jurisdictional issues”? A fence serves other purposes than inhibiting parking. For example a fence will assist to protect the native plantings from being destroyed by cars running over them. If you have seen the way people treat this lot the benefit of a tasteful fence would be obvious. Avangrid is trying to do something positive to improve the visual and health concerns of the Short Beach neighborhood. I would like to invite the Conservation Committee to attend our August 10 meeting and listen to the uninterrupted presentation by Avangrid. In attendance will be neighbors who oppose and support the project. One of our neighbors expressed their opposition to the project last night. This neighbor has replied that they will attend this meeting. Their comment will be listened to, respected and answered. Already the shellfish beds are closed and their has been is a significant reduction in the Striped Bass population before any construction, Avangrid is not to blame . The water temperature has been has high 76 degrees this summer, the storms and resulting tides have gotten much worse. I’m not a scientist but believe this is a result of Global Warming. Alternative Energies are a tool in the toolbox to reduce the harmful effects of Global Warming. I want to reiterate that as a resident of Short Beach Road, I have my own concerns about the micro- tunneling beneath the Centerville River and the potential impacts to the river and surrounding area. Avangrid will be challenged to explain how they intend to protect our river. We will have an open dialogue where all views will be expressed and respected. The meeting is 10:00 am, I hope you can attend. Sincerely, Lawrence Hurwitz 95 Short Beach Rd -- Lawrence M. Hurwitz CAUTION:This email originated from outside of the Town of Barnstable!
