HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-18-2023 - Lt Susan Battista letter-of-supportHyannis Historical Commission 10/18/23 Meeting Support of Winn design of 307 Main Street Thank you for the opportunity to express my support of Winn’s design for 307 Main Street. As a property and business owner on South Street, I appreciate the work of the historical commission and its purview of preserving the unique character of Main Street. It’s important to state that if the architectural character in Hyannis is anything, it is eclectic. There is no one era or style that defines the character of our Main Street. As one walks down the street, you see structures built over a span of many years in many different architectural styles with many different building materials used. You see clapboard (running horizontally and vertically) along with cedar shingles, bricks, concrete, and stucco clad buildings of all configurations. You see white paint, black paint, yellow paint, aqua paint and bright pink paint on facades. You see picket fences, stripped awnings, and a series of statues that include Iyannough, JFK, a large metal seagull, and a huge bull. The building Winn has proposed incorporates the best of the eclectic mix of styles and materials that one can see along Main Street (thankfully, not adorned with a bull). There is no other building on Main Street like it and nothing to compare it to. It not only fits the historical context of the diverse architectural palette, it elevates it and fulfills the Commission’s mission to address the revitalization of Main Street to create a desirable place to live, work, and enjoy. Most importantly, it provides housing that will re-invigorate our Main Street putting feet-on-the- street that will make our community safer. Each building tells as story and responds to the time it was built. It is 2023 and Winn is building a residential building—a first-of-its-kind for our Main Street. Winn has proven to be thoughtful and responsive partner. Let’s continue to look forward and not backwards as we approve this project tonight. Thank you. Susan Battista Owner, HYPHEN 525 South Street
