Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. 23 Washington Street is a one-and-one-half story Side Hall Greek Revival. The residence faces south and is set near the road on a level lot. The building adopts an irregular plan on a brick foundation and terminates in a front gable roof sheathed with asphalt shingles; an intersecting gable projects from the north roof plan. The building features a high cornice; a typical Greek Revival detail. An interior brick chimney pierces the north end of the ridge of the intersecting gable. The residence is clad with vinyl siding. Access is provided by a vestibule at the west end of the south elevation. Two, 6/1 double-hung replacement windows are featured on the south elevation along the road. A one-and-one-half story addition projects from the north end of the residence. Although modified by vinyl siding and replacement windows, 23 Washington Street maintains the form of a modest Greek Revival residence. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. There is little development north of North Street between Winter Street and Barnstable Road for much of the nineteenth century. 23 Washington Street does not appear on the 1858 map but does appear on the 1880 map as one of several J(ames) Dunbar properties (35 Washington Street). A building on the east side (other side), of Washington Street is listed as the residence of J.Dunbar. Census records indicate that James Dunbar (b 1815), mariner, and his wife Martha (b 1806) resided in the area as early as 1855. 23 Washington Street appears to have been sold by James Dunbar to Francis Congdon (b 1831), seaman, in 1874 indicating that the property was built between 1858-1874. In 1898, the property was purchased by John.E.N. Brown (b 1851), blacksmith and his wife, Mary (b 1860). The Browns, who also owned 23 Washington Street and property along North Street, occupied the property till 1929. Subsequent owners include Mary Keverny (1929-1946) as well as Daniel T.
