Subject: Town ZBA in regards to Wendys
Dear Town ZBA,
As a long term resident of the Town of Barnstable including owning 4 homes, I am always for adding new
business to the Cape.
New business provides more jobs, tax revenue, and appeal to the Cape. At the same time, I think location,
environment, and traffic are just of the few important factors to be considered in any proposal.
At the present moment, I think before introducing another busy restaurant chain to West Main Street that the
traffic design needs to be looked at first as well as the affect on the waste water system. West Main street is
already congested and quickly backs up with any activity such as school opening and closing, concerts, funerals,
road work... Perhaps figuring out better traffic routes or redesigning downtown Main Street and West Main
Street may help. It is like a time bottle of sand all going to one narrowed rotary at one end vs exiting to other end
towards Centerville.
The wastewater problem is a major one. More human waste with more businesses and housing needs to be
considered. The entire Cape, never mind Barnstable, continues with a never ending resolution to the waste water
problem and it's detrimental effect on the environment. Phinney's Lane continues to be a mess leaving residents
upset, bewildered, and frustrated. There is no way to get around with out hitting some kind of traffic jam. The
unknown of the effectiveness and costs of starting new connections to an old 1935 waste water plant further
adds to this conundrum.
Lastly, the attraction of the Old Cape Cod is what should be somewhat contained. We don't want to have the
building of multiple plazas after plazas that you see on the shores in Florida or New Jersey.
Over the past 4 years, many businesses folded with the demise of Covid and political games. I think replacing
businesses is important but should not be rushed or done impetuously. Thus, traffic, waste water system,
environment, and the attraction of Cape Cod are just a few of the factors to be considered. Being one of many
voices, the residents of the Town of Barnstable as well as those of Cape Cod should always be heard and part of
the decision making process.
Thanks for listening,
Sincerely yours,
Karin Dauphinee
Resident of 22 Collins Ave, Centerville.
