Subject:Proposed Wendy's 715 West Main St. Hyannis
Dear Zoning Board,
I am writing to share my opinion about the proposed Wendy's restaurant slated for the property at 715
West Main St. Hyannis. I have lived on Elliott Road Centerville which is off pine street less than 1/4
mile from proposed site for 39 years. I am also a former restaurant owner in the Town of Barnstable
having owned Up The Creek restaurant (which has since been demolished) for 10 years along with
my husband James Dow.
My concerns about this project are the impact of traffic and potential litter it may bring. The
intersection of Pine Street and West Main Street has become increasingly difficult to navigate in the
last few years. Having a traffic light there would be handy! There seems to be more traffic/congestion
on West Main street in general, particularly when BHS and Hy West are in session for drop off and
pick up. My experience is that avoiding trips to Hyannis via West Main Street mornings from 7am -10
am and afternoons from 2 pm and 6 pm present some degree of gridlock. The school traffic and
pedestrians coupled with commuter traffic I feel, has skyrocketed in the last few years. I have
witnessed the impact of BHS students into the Dunkin Donut store across from the high school at
dismissal. A lot of students crossing West Mains Street, many not in the designated crosswalk.
Summer traffic is another concern as well, however I have observed worse winter traffic in this area.
The configuration of Pine street with the bend at the intersection is also tough to navigate. I see this
as a safety issue. Having cars exiting onto pine street from the drive thru exit as well the driveway in
front of the building will potentially cause problems. There is much eastbound and westbound traffic
on pine street with the complication of the bend in front of the former bank, I feel that drivers will not
obey right turn only signs. I have seen many illegal turns exiting the Subway restaurant at 14 West
Main St Hyannis.
In conclusion, 715 West Main street would be better suited for something other than a high volume
restaurant.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
Mary Dow
