PLAN NOTES
• Site plan generated by BlueFlax Design LLC from Barnstable County GIS and MassMapper GIS.
• The homeowners of 580 Lumbert Mill Road are Anca Vlasopolos and Anthony Ambrosio. Over the years, they have
brought native plants into their yard with the goals of enhancing wildlife value, particularly for the birds, and improving the
biodiversity of the plant species on their property. The homeowners reached out to BlueFlax Design to request assistance
with creating a planting plan for an area that is within the 50’ buffer to a wetland resource area.
• This plan proposes restoration to an area approximately 17’ x 18’ in size, about 306 square feet, within the 50’ buffer to a
wetland resource area (Lumbert Pond). This area currently is covered in moss and turf grass, and has timbers laid in-ground.
The purpose of these timbers remains somewhat of a mystery, but we can hypothesize that previous homeowners created
some sort of boat ramp in this area, and these timbers and concrete walls are what remain. The timbers will be removed and
the area will be replanted with a mix of native shrubs and herbaceous perennials, including: common boneset (Eupatorium
perfoliatum), Joe pye weed (Eupatorium maculatum), lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), northern bayberry
(Myrica pensylvanica), summersweet (Clethra alnifolia), sweet fern (Comptonia peregrina), and winterberry holly (Ilex
verticillata).
• This plan also proposes to remove one (1) historically pruned four-to-five inch caliper oak tree, two (2) two-to-three inch
caliper oak trees, and approximately four (4) sapling-sized oak trees that currently are growing on the edge of the wetland
resource area and are blocking the homeowners’ views of the pond. These oak trees will be replaced with winterberry holly
(Ilex verticillata) and summersweet (clethra alnifolia).
• The existing timber steps down to the water are in poor condition and are unsafe for the homeowners to use. New in-ground
timber steps and a handrail are proposed to replace the existing steps.
• A number of small American holly (Ilex opaca) saplings are sprouting up in the area to be restored. They will be transplanted
to the understory of the oak and pitch pine forest on the west side of the property.
• Invasive species to be removed include bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), English ivy (Hedera helix), and multiflora rose
(Rosa multiflora).
• Greenbrier (Smilax rotundifolia), an aggressive native, will be selectively managed to reduce competition with regenerating
native species.
• Invasive plants will be selectively treated with an EPA-approved systemic herbicide and removed by hand. No soil
disturbance will occur.
• The restoration area will be planted with 50 shrubs and 15 herbaceous perennials.
• Temporary irrigation will be required for the first two to three growing seasons while plants establish. Once plants are
established irrigation will be removed.
• No mulch will be used in the restoration area other than that used at the time of planting to reduce weed intrusion and
retain moisture around the base of the plants.
• Fence and existing tree locations on this plan are approximate.
