To the Zoning Board of Appeals the Town of Barnstable,
Concerns regarding the proposed Bayridge Realty, LLC Housing Units (four (4)
housing buildings) at 900 Old Stage Road Centerville (Appeal Number 2023-034):
1. As an abutter to this property, when we built our house forty-six (46) years
ago we were informed that no one could build near or under the “power line
easement”
2. Shortly thereafter other houses were built across/opposite us, along the
“power line easement” currently “Patriot Way”
3. The former owner of this parcel, Mr. J. Craig Mederios, during the extensive
renovations of the former Dunfey’s Hotel, now The Hyannis Conference
Center, “dumped” and then “buried” tons of metal, structures, and other
debris the said parcel at 900 Old Stage Road was once level and flat in
landscape, however after the above “dumping” (which took place over a
number of years) we know it was years, as our children were little and were
fascinated by the huge dump trucks and front end loaders which Mr.
Mederios often parked there, in fact one day he walked through our property
and I asked him about parking the front end loader so close to our house,
that I felt uncomfortable about it, he stated “if the thing moves, run like hell”
the area now has “mounds” of dirt from Mr. Mederios’ actions
4. We wonder in regards to our environment what we have been living next to
all these years!!!!
5. As we are all now more aware of our environment and pollution, would it be
in the best interest to unearth what was buried (that hotel was built in the
early 1960’s), use of Asbestos, Cadmium, which is found in soft metal which
helps to prevent corrosion, Fiberglass, Halogenated flame retardants, Lead,
PVC (sewage & water piping), Radon, Silica, which is found in concrete,
sand and stone, wood treatments (Creosotes) were commonly used at that
time, (we wish those materials to remain in place as not to expose our
community to further pollution)
6. At that time, we called Cape & Vineyard Electric (now Eversource) and
spoke with a Mr. Worthington who came out to inspect the area, we spoke
several times, he stated to us the Mr. Mederios had to “clean up the area”
however, Mr. Mederios continued to “dump & bury” but only toward the late
afternoons and early evenings
7. We also called Mr. Mederios, however his daughter would answer and stated
she was aware of the situation and not to call again with complaints
8. Several years ago, our neighborhood complied with the Affordable Housing
Units at the end of Stage Coach Road, which is less than one quarter (1/4)
mile away from this newly proposed plan
9. Currently the site at 900 Old Stage Road is home to a vast array of wildlife
including coyotes, deer, fishers, fox, hawks, opossum, owls, skunks, and
other wildlife that have already been disturbed enough
10. Issues regarding necessary services: access, electrical, fire safety,
landscaping & maintenance, parking, on site property management, road
construction and maintenance, sewerage, and water concerns
11. Over the years traffic on Old Stage Road has tremendously increased due to
the increased building
12. As a thought, there are numerous vacant buildings in our town of Barnstable
that are located closer to shopping and employment opportunities, that could
be refurbished in accordance with MGI.Ch.40B, 760 CMR.
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Mr. & Mrs. John & Jeanne Remmers
