Good morning, Mrs. Capizzi,
Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention as I was unaware of problems relative to this event. I am
sorry you and your husband have been inconvenienced. I will work with the Licensing Authority and Best
Buddies to determine the best path forward. With that being said, the application for a Special One-Day
License will be on the March 27th Licensing Authority agenda for review. You are welcome to attend the 10am
meeting at Town Hall (367 Main Street, Hyannis) to speak publicly about the problems you have experienced.
Would you be amenable to meeting with me next Monday or Tuesday, at your property, so we can walk the
exterior together? If you prefer, I would be happy to invite the Best Buddies representative as well.
Lastly, I must advise that any correspondence I receive is a matter of public record. It is standard protocol to
forward all correspondence relative to a pending application to both the Barnstable Licensing Authority
members as well as the applicant themselves. Therefore, I will be forwarding your email to both parties but
will redact your email address to encourage resolution through the Licensing office.
Note - Best Buddies Supporting Corp owns the lot located at 1014 Craigville Beach Road; this is not a town
owned parking lot.
I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Erin Logan

Subject: Best Buddies June event
Good morning Erin,
2
My name is Mary Capizzi and I’m writing to you regarding the Best
Buddies event that is planned to be held this year at the Eunice Kennedy
Shriver parking lot on June 1, 2024. My husband and I own the house
located at 1010 Craigville Beach Rd, which is immediately next door to
the parking lot. We also own one of the cottages at 1006 Craigville
Beach Road, which is also immediately next door to the parking lot.
In years past I’ve made multiple requests to the Town to deny the
permit/license to Best Buddies. From the building project to the event
itself, it is too large, too loud, and too intrusive for our little area. It
rattles our buildings and windows. The Town refused my requests. They
licensed the event for Best Buddies, but they DID ask them to make
certain changes to their practices.
I’m writing to tell you that Best Buddies has gone back to their old
practices. Last year, 2023, (among other things), they allowed people to
use the cottage parking spaces for drop-off/pick-up. They also had a
large delivery truck blocking part of our driveway while the driver
visited the beach. It made it difficult and dangerous to pull out onto the
road, and Nauset Disposal was due that day to pick up the garbage at the
cottages and they would not be able to get into our driveway. I tried to
find someone in charge at the Best Buddies tent to handle the problem,
but the guy I found (who was apparently “in charge”), didn’t know who
was in charge of the trucks or the cars using our parking spots…or
pretty much anything else. He didn’t know where the driver of the big
truck was, but the driver eventually returned and moved the truck. It
was there a couple of hours.

My request is the old request, please do not issue a license to Best
Buddies to use our small area to host their event. They do not have the
wherewithal or even the desire to do it well. They have options. The
Barnstable High School would be ideal, or the middle school, or the
Hyannis Village Green. They even have the Hyannisport beach…after all,
they market the event as being in Hyannisport when it’s actually hosted
in Centerville. Why not REALLY have it in Hyannisport?

I’m being denied the full and free use and enjoyment of my property due
to Best Buddies’ practices, and the Town of Barnstable is complicit.
What will the Town do to help with this problem?
Sincerely
Mary Capizzi
Ps. I would put my phone number on here in case you wanted to call,
but last time I did that, you (the Town) gave my phone number to Best
Buddies. Bad practice from the Town.
