SHELLFISH SURVEY RESULTS: A shellfish survey was conducted on Wednesday, May
1, 2024, at 12:30PM by Elizabeth Lewis and Ryan Henry of Natural Resources. Low tide
occurred at 12:46PM (height +0.6 ft.). The area of the extension was examined for substrate
type and shellfish.
Harvest was done by a 3/8” mesh lined bull rake. The substrate was thick, black muck with
areas of large grain sand mixed throughout. The area is not conducive to settlement and
recruitment of shellfish. Oftentimes we do find larger quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria)
in this sediment, but in this instance, no quahogs were found after several random pulls
within the extension footprint. I have attached pictures for reference.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The proposed project is located in the Massachusetts
Division of Marine Fisheries designated growing area (DMF/SC24.2); classified as
prohibited.
Natural Resources does not have objections to the project proposal at this time.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth A. Lewis, Shellfish Biologist
