HomeMy WebLinkAbout306 Long Beach Road Shellfish Survey 1 TO: Conservation Commission FROM: Natural Resources, Town of Barnstable DATE: May 3, 2024 RE: APPLICATION: (N.O.I.), Proposed Dock Reconstruction, Extension, and new floats APPLICANT: George and Laurie Attar and Lisa and Jeffrey Bieling LOCATION: 306 Long Beach Road Centerville, MA 02632 REPRESENTATIVE: Mark Burgess Shorefront Consulting 290 Center St., Dennis Port, MA 02639 SHELLFISH SURVEY RESULTS: A shellfish survey was conducted on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 12:30PM by Elizabeth Lewis and Ryan Henry of Natural Resources. Low tide occurred at 12:46PM (height +0.6 ft.). The area of the extension was examined for substrate type and shellfish. Harvest was done by a 3/8” mesh lined bull rake. The substrate was thick, black muck with areas of large grain sand mixed throughout. The area is not conducive to settlement and recruitment of shellfish. Oftentimes we do find larger quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) in this sediment, but in this instance, no quahogs were found after several random pulls within the extension footprint. I have attached pictures for reference. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The proposed project is located in the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries designated growing area (DMF/SC24.2); classified as prohibited. Natural Resources does not have objections to the project proposal at this time. Sincerely, Elizabeth A.
