HomeMy WebLinkAboutRees Comment 7.19.24I’ve watched the July 10th OKH meeting and have a couple of comments I’d like to
make.
As far as I am aware, only two new houses have been built in Barnstable Village to
the Yarmouth Port line in the past 25 years. One in 2019, and the other close to being
completed. (Photos attached.) I think both are examples of how a new design can fit in
with the neighborhood in the best possible way. Obviously, both have a smaller
footprint than the proposed design for 56 Red Wing.
I would like to take issue with a remark Mr. Lemay made at the last meeting.
Commenting on the proposed property he said, “that we feel (the house) will raise
property values.” Six of the homeowners between Red Wing Lane and Commerce
made Barnstable Village their home in the 20th century – one family has owned theirs
since the 19th century. Two of the other three have been owned by the same people for
20 years and 12 years, while the house opposite Commerce, which used to be a rental
property, was lovingly restored in 2007. I cannot speak for the rest of the
homeowners, but property values mean nothing if you have no intention of moving
from the home in which you live. Raised property values are what you don’t want
because it raises your real estate taxes. Our assessed values have doubled in the past
seven years and our real estate taxes accordingly.
