The following four structures require in-water work: 1. Broadway Daybeacon 3, Falmouth, MA – This ATON services the Woods Hole Passage between Woods Hole, Massachusetts and Nonamesset Island. The structure is a steel monopile braced with two steel batter piles. The project proposes to replace the structure with a new structure comprised of three steel batter piles. 2. Collier Ledge Isolated Danger VAIS, Barnstable, MA – This site is a remnant mound of riprap located at a naturally shoaled area of the Nantucket Sound. No aide or navigational equipment exists at the riprap; however, the area is marked by a lighted isolated danger buoy and a “DANGER ROCKS” marker buoy. The existing riprap is partially exposed at low tide and reportedly becomes a navigational hazard when fully submerged at higher tides. The project proposes to remove the riprap to a minimum depth below MLLW to reduce the navigational hazard. 3. Southwest Rock Daybeacon, Barnstable, MA – This site is a failed ATON near the south coast of Barnstable, Massachusetts in the Nantucket Sound. The structure is a riprap mound that supports a toppled spindle tower and pre-cast concrete foundation. The ATON has been superseded by an adjacent “DANGER ROCKS” marker buoy. The project proposes removal of the spindle, foundation, and riprap to a minimum depth below MLLW to reduce the navigational hazard. 4. Saquatucket Harbor East Jetty Light 6, Harwich, MA – This site is an obsolete ATON near the end of the east jetty of the port of Harwich, Massachusetts in the Nantucket Sound. The structure is a braced timber pile structure with a timber superstructure. The ATON has been superseded by a nearby replacement aide. The 16-inch timber king pile and four 16- inch timber piles have widespread severe fungal decay with 100 percent section loss. The project proposes to remove the structure in its entirety. The four structures above require authorization under the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act. The Notice of Intent and supplemental information for the two structures in Barnstable can be accessed here: 09032024-Carosotto-US Coast Guard Aids to Navigation-Barnstable.pdf Hardcopies have been mailed to the Conservation Commission, Shellfish Biologist, and Harbormaster, as well as DEP and NHESP. We look forward to working with you as you complete your review for this project. Thank you, Christine CHRISTINE J.
