F r i d a y , O c t o b e r 1 1 Barnstable Village Loop Beginning time: 10 AM Approx. length/time to complete: 1.5-2 hrs Starting point: Barnstable Superior Court Building Rating of terrain and pace: Moderate with some hills Directions: Rte. 6A to Barnstable Village. Meet in front of the courthouse at 3195 Main St. Parking is available in the lots behind the courthouse. Walk leader: Doug Payson, capecodhiker@gmail.com A walk through historic Barnstable Village on sidewalks and wooded trails. Explore the natural history of classic Cape Cod habitats. Maximum Effort with TheDeadPoolians at Hyannis Ponds Wildlife Area Beginning time: 10:30 AM Approx. length/time to complete: Entire loop is 3.75 miles, or inner loop is 1.5-2 miles. Allow 2-3 hours. Starting point: Trailhead at N 41° 40.936 W 070° 16.832 Rating of terrain and pace: Terrain is 2 to 2.5, some light climbing of elevated ground and soft footing and brambles. Pace will be extremely casual. Directions: Trailhead entrance is off Mary Dunn Road Walk leader: Erica Daniels, 954-856-7989, Geocaching profile name TheDeadPoolians Join Erica & Sunny to traverse these well-traveled and maintained trails in search of hidden "treasures!" We will be on hand to guide you with navigation assistance and tips for finding the treasures in the woods! This loop has a total of 12 geocaches, and a few different trail loops if you don't wish to complete the entire trail with us. Do as much or as little of the trail as you like. Hidden Gems of Hyannis Beginning time: 3 PM Approx. length/time to complete: 1.5-2 hrs Starting point: JFK Museum Rating of terrain and pace: Level, sidewalks and some sand walking Directions: JFK Museum at 397 Main St., Hyannis. S a t u r d a y , O c t o b e r 1 2 The Length of Cotuit Walk *Registration required* Beginning time: 8:30 AM Approx. length/time to complete: 4.5 mi./2.5 hrs. Starting point: Eagle Pond parking area, Cotuit Rating of terrain and pace: Mostly flat, mostly woods with several road crossings Directions: Park at Eagle Pond parking area, a pullout across from 820 Putnam Ave, Cotuit. Carpool to Crocker Neck at the south end of Cotuit. Walk leader: Mark Robinson, mark@thecompact.net Limited to the first 15 signups. Please contact leader via email to register. Children must be above 12 years old and accompanied by a parent. Everyone should be able to walk long distances, and wear appropriate footwear. Bring water. Walk through mostly connected conservation areas. Led by long-time Cotuit naturalist. What’s in Your Pocket with the DaVinci Pursuit *Registration required* Beginning time: 1 PM Approx. length/time to complete: 1.5 hr Walk leader: Barnstable Land Trust, register at blt.org/events When we are out for a leisurely walk, are there some artistic tools and supplies we should be carrying with us? In this art/science walk you will learn about ways to prepare and use small art kits including supplies and carrying cases. You will also learn about things you can do with your cellphones as well as how to capture these quick and fleeting moments. The walk is intended to introduce participants to the science concepts through the arts and is designed for non- artists and artists, photographers, and families of all ages and ability levels. Meetinghouse Farm Beginning time: 10 AM Approx. length/time to complete: <1 mi./.5 hr Starting point: 2135 Meetinghouse Way Rating of terrain and pace: Average pace, flat with some rises and slightly bumpy areas Directions: Route 149 to 2135 Meetinghouse Farm. Park in the green areas near the greenhouse/barn. There will be parking signs. Walk leader: Earl Springer, etslra@comcast.net Conservation property with short trails, community gardens, floral quilt, butterfly garden/holly grove, a variety of trees, labyrinth, and greenhouse/barn. Hathaways Pond Mystery Walk Beginning time: 3:30 PM Approx. length/time to complete: 1.5 mi./1.5 hrs. Starting point: Hathaways Pond Beach Rating of terrain and pace: Moderate pace and modest climbing Directions: Hathaways Pond Recreation Area next to the dog park. Head down the hill to beach parking lot. Walk leader: Lev Malakhoff, capedcod@gmail.com Seek out the mysteries of the Hathaways Ponds with pathways enthusiast Lev Malakhoff. The walk will pass through a land that has changed over the years in some unexpected ways. Take in idyllic views of the ponds along the way. Marstons Mills River Headwaters Restoration Walk Beginning time: 10 AM Approx. length/time to complete: 1.5 mi./1 hr. Starting point: 948 River Road Rating of terrain and pace: Flat terrain at an easy pace. Bring sunblock/hat as there is minimal shade. Directions: Pull into the shared driveway at 948 River Road. Stay straight until reaching the cranberry bogs. Walk leader: Luke Caldrin, info@bcleanwater.org, 508-420-0780 Join Barnstable Clean Water Coalition (BCWC) staff on a tour of BCWC’s historic 1800's cranberry bogs at the headwaters of the Marstons Mills River. See the headwaters of the river, learn about ongoing wetlands restoration work in the area and how this bog system provides an opportunity to improve water quality in the Three Bays estuary. Starting point: Sandy Neck Gatehouse Rating of terrain and pace: Challenging, strenuous terrain Directions: 425 Sandy Rd. off Rte. 6A. Parking is first come first served at the gatehouse, with additional parking at the beach lot Walk leader: Dina Allard, 508-362-8300 Enjoy the beautiful colors of fall on Sandy Neck. Natural Resource Officers will lead participants through the various habitats found throughout the park with opportunities to see some of the different species that call Sandy Neck home.
