Good Morning Genna,
When you have a moment, could you please send this plan to each Open Space Committee Member. I would like
everyone to have a copy of the plan as this will be an active project this year. Barnstable Land Trust and I are
sharing an Individual Placement from AmeriCorps this year. One of our projects is to amend the Cape Cod
Pathways Plan as it has not been revised since 2003. Many of the pathways are not feasible to implement and
require to be amended. There are various stakeholders ( both internally and externally in the Town) that need to be
included in this planning process. We hope to be at the December meeting to present the project to Open Space.
Thank you,
Grayce Rogers

Good Morning Everyone,

This is a great opportunity to discuss Cape Cod Pathways. This year, Barnstable Land Trust and Asset
management have been awarded the service of an AmeriCorps Individual Placement. One of the projects we will
be working on this year is amending the official Barnstable Cape Cod Pathways plan from 2003. After speaking to
the County and other stakeholders, the 2003 plan seems to be the most up to date plan. A few months ago, I
reviewed the plan with the Cape Cod Commission staff as the Cape Cod Pathways started as a County initiative
in 1993. However, the County has since abandoned the initiative within the last several years. This is due to the
fact that the project was no longer feasible to implement Cape wide as some Select Boards did not support the
initiative and some of the proposed pathways became impractical.
Asset Management, BLT, and AmeriCorps will be seeking to amend the Barnstable plan to create a practical trail
network. Currently, the plan proposes sections of the pathways to move through private property and other
sections that may cross developed property. After speaking to the County about the intent of the initiative, the
Cape Cod Pathways plan will need to be amended by numerous stakeholders, such as various town
divisions/departments and external stakeholders, like: Barnstable Land Trust, Cape Cod Community College,
and others. This plan will be proposed at a future Open Space Committee as they will be included in the process.
I am hoping we will present the proposal in December. I understand that Open Space is charged with the
implementation of the Cape Cod Pathways, but there are various other stakeholders that should be included in
the process.
The path at the Cape Cod Community College was not implemented in consideration to the recommendations in
the 2003 plan nor reviewed with town staff before its implementation thus it has not been posted on the town
maps. However, as the plan is reviewed this year, this can certainly be discussed. If the group agrees than it will
be published on the town maps for Cape Cod Pathways.
I apologize for the long-winded email. However, there is a lot of historical context surrounding the Cape Cod
Pathways. It would be great to finish the Cape Cod Pathways in Barnstable!
Please, do not hesitate to reach out with questions!
Thank you,
Grayce Rogers

Hello Jim,
As a follow-up of our meeting last week, I wanted you to have the latest information about changes to the Cape
Cod Pathways in the vicinity of the Cape Cod Community College. These changes were discussed and approved
by the Open Space Committee and fall under the Committee’s responsibilities per town regulations § 241-
44.5. These trails are signposted and should be accurately reflected in the various maps available on the town’s
website.
The updates including linework are available for download from Open Street Map are shown in screen captures
and links below. The trail alignment information is also available for download from MassGIS:
https://massgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/mapviewer/index.html
Here's the change to the Main (Red) Trail:

The current Cape Cod Pathways routing is described in the attached document and should replace the version
currently found on the town’s website at:

There are several other map products on the town’s website that should be updated including:

(note: this version was produced by Barnstable Land Trust – I have cc’d them in this email in hopes that they will
update the map. I’ve also cc-d Grayce Rogers who is looking into the pathways program).
