Subject: Colliers Ledge
To who it may concern,
I recently read a proposal to take down Colliers ledge. I would like to this le er to voice my concern
over the proposed project.
Dismantling a historic and natural structure seems to me to be a waste of me and tax payer money
only to destroy great habitat that benefits both the fish that call it home and the fisherman that take
advantage of them. The act of taking down the rocks seems to set a precedent that begs the ques on
should we remove Bishops and Clerks? Should we take all the rocks from woods hole and the
Elizabethan Islands? Should we dismantle the en rety of Maines rocky coast? And for what? For
safety? The ledge is marked by both a lighted hazard to naviga on buoy and a bouy marking the rock
pile.
I am a USCG licensed captain with a degree in nau cal science from North East Mari me Ins tute. I
have taken mul ple courses on chart plo ng and aids to naviga on and apply them in my day to day
life as a commercial fisherman in the town of Barnstable. With this background I feel that safety
should be the sole responsibility of the boater. For the folks who buy boats and make unwise choices
like running into well marked rock piles that is their fault and their fault alone. Boa ng inherently is
dangerous and comes with consequences for those who do not take the me to learn aids to
naviga on, look at a chart, learn how to read their radar, and take all necessary safety precau ons.
The folly of man is no reason to spent taxpayer money to destroy the environment.
